August 20, 2010 @ 08:05 PM — by Laurence Jacobs M.D.

LOWER YOUR INFERTILITY COSTS (Part VI)  discusses how to save money on medications, especially expensive 'injectibles'.

Prices vary from pharmacy to pharmacy and can often be obtained for less online or through mail order. It pays to shop around, do your homework … look at Freedom Drug and look at Walgreen’s specialty pharmacy or Healy pharmacy.

Serono offers a ‘medication scholarship’ called Compassionate Care which gives away millions of dollars in free drugs. Serono’s phone number is 866-538-7879.    Ferring has a program called HEART (Helping Expand Access to Reproductive Therapy) program.   Ferring’s phone number is 888-337-7464.

Following the initial visit with your RE, additional diagnostic testing may be needed, based on the level of investigation you have had previously.

Depending on a woman’s age (and ovarian reserve), sperm function testing, a couple’s work schedule and time commitments, insurance, finances and risk tolerance, we can help most couples decide on the treatment options that may be best suited for them.

LOWER YOUR INFERTILITY COSTS ( Part IV ): Before You Go to the Reproductive Endocrinologist; Your pre-treatment necessities

July 27, 2010 @ 05:31 PM — by Laurence Jacobs M.D.

Before you go to the Reproductive Endocrinologist, how do you choose the right doctor or clinic?

Beware how some Fertility clinics can create overly inflated statistics!!

The Internet: a wealth of information... Since anyone can post information on the internet …fact or fiction, be on the lookout for claims or cures that seem too good to be true. Listen to your intuition. Unsupervised ‘chat rooms’ can often be erroneous, dangerous and give out misinformation about treatments, REs and fertility programs.

Ideally your Ob/Gyn or PCP may be able to perform many of the ‘basic fertility tests’ and examine you and your partner for any underlying medical conditions that might be affecting your fertility. This may save considerable costs.

Pretreatment necessities ...required tests before you get started.

Laboratory costs and tests are discussed.

UNIVERSAL GENETIC TEST by COUNSYL

March 01, 2010 @ 10:43 PM — by Laurence Jacobs M.D.
The Universal Genetic Test by Counsyl is a safe, inexpensive, non-invasive medical test that screens for dozens of serious genetic diseases, such as Cystic Fibrosis (CF), Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Sickle Cell, and Tay-Sachs disease (TSD). These genetic diseases cannot be cured, but men and women who screen before having children and test positive for the same condition have a number of reproductive options available to them, including IVF coupled with preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). By screening simultaneously for more than 100 single gene genetic diseases at only $349, Counsyl’s Universal Genetic Test represents a major breakthrough in carrier screening! It is far less expensive yet far more comprehensive than currently available carrier screening and should be offered to all couples planning to have a child.

WRONG EMBRYOS TRANSFERRED!!! Why It Should Never Happen

February 05, 2010 @ 08:53 PM — by Laurence Jacobs M.D.
It was all over the news in 2009 that in a tragic mix-up, a patient revealed that the fertility clinic where she underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) transferred another couple's embryos into her uterus by mistake … and she recently delivered the baby!!! With proper procedural steps and safeguards at a fertility clinic’s embryology lab, that should NEVER happen! The following discussion about proper Embryology standard operating procedures outlines why a couple should never get the wrong embryos… if these IVF safeguards are followed properly.

FEMALE AGE, OVARIAN RESERVE and INFERTILITY

February 05, 2010 @ 01:29 PM — by Laurence Jacobs M.D.
Female age is a critical factor in determining the chances for getting pregnant. Increased infertility with female aging is well-documented and very common in our society. In general, egg quality and quantity start to decline slowly starting in the early 30s, and then much faster in the late 30s and early 40s. At any given time, the number of good eggs that remain is very dependent on the woman's age plus other factors, such as genetics and previous ovarian surgeries. In general, 'ovarian age' closely parallels the woman's chronological age. However, since this is not always the case, it is very important for REs and gynecologists to assess the patient's ovarian reserve of eggs. That's why screening for ovarian reserve is such a vital part of the initial evaluation for infertility patients of any age. The following ovarian reserve screening tests are used by reproductive endocrinologists to predict a woman’s remaining ‘egg supply’. FSH & Estrogen (Estradiol) serum levels (FSH & E2) on cycle day ‘3’ Ultrasound- Antral Follicle Counts (US-AFC) on cycle day ‘3’ Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) levels Other: Clomiphene Citrate Challenge Test- CCCT; Inhibin serum levels
